PHP is an open source server-side scripting language that is generally developed on a Unix or Linux operating system. It is powerful and can be used to interact with a MySQL database. Since PHP and MySQL are open source, there is a definite cost advantage to using this environment as opposed to ASP and SQL. We use PHP to build simple mail forms and also complex applications like shopping carts.
Microsoft's Active Scripting Pages is also a server-side scripting language, but is primarily executed on Windows servers. As PHP, ASP is powerful and interacts with databases. Since we can develop in either an open-source or Windows environment, which programming language will be used is determined by the clients' needs and what platform the site is to be hosted.
This can be an effective language for simple mathematical computations. For example, an order form that needs to change the price based on what the user selects. Since JavaScript is a client-side script, it is viewable in the source code. What this means is you don't want to have passwords and other sensitive information in the code.
